On February 19, 2008, an LLC called Mangia Technologies out of Utah filed to protect the trademark Wiimbledon in relation to “entertainment in the nature of Nintendo Wii Tennis tournaments; providing facilities for Nintendo Wii Tennis tournaments”.
Mork was unable to find much information about Mangia Technologies other than a broken website and a LinkedIn profile for its Owner, one Danny Villarreal.
However, the name Wiimbledon seems to already be in use by Steve Bryant and Lane Buschel, a couple of Brooklyn, NY residents who have set up a website at Wiimbledon.net and have gotten a considerable amount of press for their own Wii Tennis Tournaments.
While Nintendo is listed as a sponsor, and (according to the footer on their website) provided the grand prize for the Wiimbledon.net tournament, the Wiimbledon name seems dangerously close to the well-known and established trademarks “Wii” and “Wimbledon”, and could potentially create some confusion among, you know…the easily confused.
In any case, Mork invites any user (new or existing) to comment on both the potential conflict between Mangia Technologies and Wiimbledon.net, as well as the likelihood of conflict between Nintendo, The All England Lawn Tennis Club (owner of the Wimbledon trademark) and any third parties regarding the use of the Wiimbledon name.
