User-submitted news rating and discussion site Digg recently refiled to protect their trademark.
In their original Digg filing on February 27, 2006, the entry for the “telecommunications” code and classes reads: “providing online public commentary in the nature of online chat rooms and electronic bulletin boards for transmission of messages among users in the field of general interest.” This sounds like the Digg we all know and, well…love or hate, depending on who you are.
However, in the new Digg trademark filing on October 31, 2007, the entry for the very same code and classes reads: “transmission of news; communications services, namely, transmitting information and data of general interest to the public via the Internet; communications services, namely, transmitting streamed sound and audio-visual recordings via the Internet.”
There are rampant rumors that Digg is for sale. And Valleywag suggests that Digg might be bought by a company such as the New York Times or the Washington Post. Mork wonders if this shift in language in the trademark filings represents an upcoming shift in focus for the popular site, or confirms an upcoming deal with a large traditional news organization.
