On October 23, 2007, video game company Sony Computer Entertainment America filed to protect the trademark Blasto in relation to video game software and an online real-time video game. This filing replaces Sony’s original Blasto filing which was canceled in 2005.
The original Blasto game was for the PlayStation and was released in 1998. Although not well-reviewed by gamers and critics, the game featured the late Phil Hartman as the voice of the main character, Captain Blasto, a muscular, dimwitted hero who fights aliens and hits on hot babes throughout the solar system. Mork wonders if the renewed interest in the name indicates future plans to further develop the character and franchise.
While Sony had also registered the name Captain Blasto in 1997, the filing was abandoned in 1999. Since then, the name Captain Blasto has been registered by first-time filmmaker Christopher Preksta. His Captain Blasto film, a low-budget feature about a high-school student who becomes a super-hero, appears to have no relation to the Sony property.
